Welcome to my blog!
As an educator in information systems, I have been informing my students of the power of blogs for the past few years now. However, this is my first foray into the blogosphere. Blogs have been, in my opinion, a very powerful medium that can be leveraged by people and organizations to develop intimate connections with an audience.
Think about it. When you read a blog post, don’t you feel like you know the person that posted the blog just a little better than you did before reading it? Now think if you were to read that person’s blog on a regular basis. You might feel that you know the author pretty well even though you may not have even met! That is what I mean by developing intimate connections…you get to know the blog author through their posts.
So why am I blogging now? Well, let’s just say that I am using it as a platform. I am very passionate about getting students involved in technical fields. Did you know that there are only about 14,000 computer science, IT, and MIS majors in the U.S.? That is astounding given the fact that technical jobs are consistently ranked as one of the fastest growing jobs. Plus, you have to factor in the fact that many of the baby boomers are about to retire, so that will open up even more jobs.
Why aren’t students excited about tech? Well, my personal belief is that bad press about offshoring of tech jobs and the fallout from the Internet bubble bust of 2001 has left many students (and their parents) with some negative feelings about the technical field. This, to me, is sad because the jobs are there, and there is a need for people to fill them. But it isn’t just technical jobs…..technology is embedded in EVERY job to some extent. So, quite simply put, those that learn about technology and can utilize it in their careers will thrive, and those that do not will struggle.
So this blog is my humble attempt to reach as many people as I can to get people excited about technology. From time to time, I will post items about some of the things that I am doing to advance my cause (such as Imagine Cup) or about the new trends in technology that I feel can revolutionize business (Cloud Computing). It is my hopes that these posts will get you as excited and passionate about technology as I am! Thanks for stopping by and I hope that you come back again!
